The Department of Structural Mechanics was founded in 1945. The Department foundation was coincident with the transformation of Gdańsk University of Technology into a Polish technical state university.
The scientific research of the Department focuses on the following fields: mechanics of thin-walled structures, non-linear statics and dynamics of shells, damage problems, reliability theory, optimization and sensitivity analysis, identification of structural models and structural damage, vibration impact on structures, biomechanics.
The research activity of the Department coincides with its educational task. The educational branch covers the following courses: engineering and structural mechanics, theory of elasticity and plasticity, experimental methods, modelling of engineering structures, stability and limit load-carrying capacity of structures, non-linear structural analysis, elements of design theory, structural reliability, complemented by the mechanics-related ones, like operational and numerical methods, information technologies (IT). A number of M.Sc. courses at our Deparmtent is delivered in English (Theory of Elasticity and Plasticity, Reliability of Structures), both for foreign and Polish students, the latter take advantage in technical and scientific English in order to find a remarkable work abroad.
