The Department of Structural Mechanics was established in 1945, in parallel with the transformation of Gdańsk University of Technology into a Polish technical university. Since then, we have been advancing research and education in the field of structural mechanics, combining academic tradition with modern directions in engineering. At the Department, we study the behavior of engineering structures - from classical problems of structural mechanics and selected topics in biomechanics, through advanced numerical methods, to experimental research that enables the verification of theoretical and numerical models as well as the development of practical methods for structural design and safety assessment.
In our academic work, we combine scientific research with engineering practice, providing students with a solid theoretical foundation and the skills necessary for the design and analysis of contemporary structures. An important part of our activity is cooperation with the socio-economic environment, which allows us to translate research results into practical applications and supports the development of modern solutions in both civil engineering and mechanical engineering.
Why collaborate with us?
- Education – we teach courses across various faculties of Gdańsk University of Technology, primarily in fields related to civil and mechanical engineering, including courses offered in English.
- Research – we conduct national and international projects in cooperation with industry and academic/research institutions.
- Team – we foster an open environment for ambitious students, doctoral candidates, and external partners.
The Department’s goal is to educate engineers and conduct research that advances structural mechanics in the face of contemporary challenges in civil engineering and applications in biomechanics. Our work serves as a bridge between classical mechanics and modern areas of research and engineering practice.
The Department was successively headed by:
- Prof. Witold Nowacki (1945-1952)
- Prof. Roman Kazimierczak (1952-1985)
- Prof. Eugeniusz Bielewicz (1985-1993)
- Prof. Zbigniew Cywiński (1993-1998)
- Prof. Czesław Szymczak (1998-2005)
- Prof. Jacek Chróścielewski (2005-2013) (Department of Structural Mechanics and Bridges)
- Prof. Paweł Kłosowski (2013-2017)
- Assoc. Prof. Agnieszka Tomaszewska (2017-2025)
- Assoc. Prof. Marcin Kujawa (since 2025)
