red label
The SONATA competition is an initiative by the National Science Centre (NCN) in Poland, aimed at researchers in the early stages of their academic careers. Its purpose is to support the implementation of innovative basic research that expands knowledge across various scientific disciplines.

Position: Research Fellow

Position details:
Research Fellow in the field of laboratory data analysis and numerical modeling as part of project 2023/51/D/ST8/00786 (“Soil-structure interaction for large deformations under various boundary conditions”).

Number of positions available: 1

Terms of employment:
Scientific scholarship of 3,000 PLN gross per month for 12 months starting from February 1, 2025, with the possibility of extension up to 28 months.

Application deadline: December 12, 2024, by 12:00 PM

Required Qualifications:

  • A student pursuing an undergraduate or master’s degree in Civil Engineering (preferred specialization: geotechnics or water and marine engineering).
  • Basic knowledge of continuum mechanics and soil mechanics (soil strength, soil compressibility).
  • Basic programming skills (e.g., familiarity with MATLAB or Python).
  • Basic experience with numerical analysis software (e.g., Abaqus, Robot, or Plaxis).
  • Ability to perform statistical data analysis (e.g., knowledge of regression, standard deviation, coefficient of variation).

Scope of Work:

  • Assisting with the analysis of laboratory test data (triaxial tests and soil-steel contact tests) and managing collected research data.
  • Preparing basic scripts in Python or MATLAB.
  • Independently analyzing test results statistically and formulating basic research conclusions.
  • Gathering research on sand–steel interaction from available scientific literature.
  • Assisting with the development of a soil-steel contact model.

Required Documents:

  1. CV and a brief cover letter.
  2. Certification confirming compliance with §3, item 3 of the Regulations for awarding NCN scholarships in research projects funded by the National Science Centre (Annex to NCN Council Resolution No. 25/2024 of March 4, 2024).

Documents should be submitted electronically (PDF files) to: jakub.konkol@pg.edu.pl (subject line: Sonata-19 Scholarship). Candidate achievements will be assessed according to §12, item 3 of the NCN scholarship regulations.
