Competition for the Position of Research Fellow in the NCN SONATA Project
Position: Research Fellow
Position details:
Research Fellow in the field of laboratory data analysis and numerical modeling as part of project 2023/51/D/ST8/00786 (“Soil-structure interaction for large deformations under various boundary conditions”).
Number of positions available: 1
Terms of employment:
Scientific scholarship of 3,000 PLN gross per month for 12 months starting from February 1, 2025, with the possibility of extension up to 28 months.

Required Qualifications:
- A student pursuing an undergraduate or master’s degree in Civil Engineering (preferred specialization: geotechnics or water and marine engineering).
- Basic knowledge of continuum mechanics and soil mechanics (soil strength, soil compressibility).
- Basic programming skills (e.g., familiarity with MATLAB or Python).
- Basic experience with numerical analysis software (e.g., Abaqus, Robot, or Plaxis).
- Ability to perform statistical data analysis (e.g., knowledge of regression, standard deviation, coefficient of variation).
Scope of Work:
- Assisting with the analysis of laboratory test data (triaxial tests and soil-steel contact tests) and managing collected research data.
- Preparing basic scripts in Python or MATLAB.
- Independently analyzing test results statistically and formulating basic research conclusions.
- Gathering research on sand–steel interaction from available scientific literature.
- Assisting with the development of a soil-steel contact model.

- Basic understanding of geotechnical laboratory equipment (e.g., oedometer, triaxial compression apparatus, ring shear apparatus).
- Familiarity with basic measurement instruments (e.g., calipers, micrometers).
- Basic knowledge of soil mechanics related to soil strength and compressibility.
- Skills in analyzing laboratory data using spreadsheet software.
- Manual dexterity for minor tasks (e.g., preparing samples, assembling filter paper, etc.).
Scope of Work:
- Assisting with advanced laboratory tests (triaxial tests and soil-steel contact tests).
- Preparing soil samples for compressibility tests (oedometer testing) and stiffness/strength tests (triaxial and ring shear tests).
- Independently conducting tests on basic soil physical properties (sieve analysis) and oedometer tests.
- Independently performing shear tests in a ring shear apparatus under constant normal load and constant volume conditions.
- Preparing preliminary research reports.
