The United Nations General Assembly decided on November 6, 2001, that every year the International Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict would be observed. This initiative was led by UNEP, the United Nations Environment Programme. On this day, it is worth highlighting the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the Gdańsk University of Technology, which carries out numerous projects focused on ecosystem restoration and protection.

One example is the "Spitsbergen Challenge" project led by members of the "MIŚ - Microbiology in Environmental Engineering "  Science Club under the supervision of PhD Eng. Katarzyna Jankowska, associate professor. This project focuses on studying the effects of climate change on Arctic ecosystems in Spitsbergen, where the team analyzes glacier melting and its impact on local fauna and flora. This initiative won an award at the "KoKoN" Student Science Club Competition and was also recognized at the FUT 2024 Student Environment Gala. Another significant project is the renaturation of the Reda River, led by the Professor with Habilitation, Engineer, Dean of the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering Ewa Wojciechowska. This project involves restoring the natural course of the river, rebuilding habitats for aquatic species, and enhancing water retention to boost biodiversity and mitigate drought in the Pomeranian region.

The Faculty is also involved in the reclamation of post-industrial areas around Gdańsk, supervised by PhD Eng. Elżbieta Urbańska-Galewska, professor at Gdańsk University of Technology. This project focuses on improving soil quality, removing pollutants, and restoring vegetation so that these degraded lands can be repurposed for recreational or investment purposes. Another initiative is a water resources protection project in the Pomeranian Voivodeship, led by PhD Eng. Katarzyna Weinerowska-Bords, professor at Gdańsk University of Technology. Collaborating with local governments and water companies, this team works on methods to increase water retention in urban areas and designs rainwater harvesting systems.

The Faculty also runs educational campaigns, organizing workshops and seminars for local communities, as well as cleanup and tree-planting initiatives. The goal of these actions is to raise environmental awareness and actively engage residents in environmental protection. Through these initiatives, the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering significantly contributes to ecosystem restoration and protection while promoting sustainable engineering solutions that address contemporary climate and environmental challenges.
