Gdańsk University of Technology secured the top position in Poland in the inaugural edition of the THE Interdisciplinary Science Rankings (THE ISR), developed by Times Higher Education (THE) in collaboration with Schmidt Science Fellows – a prestigious fellowship program supporting young researchers in interdisciplinary research.

THE ISR is the world’s first ranking that measures universities' contributions to the development of interdisciplinary research, which is key to solving contemporary global challenges. This year’s edition evaluated 749 universities from 92 countries. Among them, Gdańsk University of Technology ranked 184th globally and was the only Polish institution to place in the top 200. Other Polish universities in the ranking include AGH University of Science and Technology and Wrocław University of Science and Technology, which ranked in the 201–250 range.

The ranking is based on several indicators, covering three key stages of the interdisciplinary research lifecycle:

Inputs (19%)

  • The share of interdisciplinary research revenue in total research revenue (8%)
  • Research funding from industry (11%).

Process (16%)

  • Whether the university measures its achievements in interdisciplinary research (4%)
  • Whether it has infrastructure supporting interdisciplinary research (4%)
  • Whether it provides specialist support to interdisciplinary research teams (4%)
  • Whether it promotes interdisciplinary research within its academic promotion system (4%).

Outputs (65%)

  • The number of interdisciplinary scientific publications (10%)
  • The share of interdisciplinary publications in total scientific output (5%)
  • Citation impact of publications (25%)
  • The university’s reputation among researchers for supporting interdisciplinary research teams (25%).

Gdańsk University of Technology, as Poland’s leader, is among global universities recognized for supporting research that transcends traditional disciplinary boundaries. The top spots in the ranking were claimed by MIT, Stanford University, and the National University of Singapore, with Wageningen University & Research being the highest-ranked European institution (7th place).

The ranking’s creators emphasize that interdisciplinarity is the future of science, allowing the integration of achievements from various fields to address critical global issues. The success of Gdańsk University of Technology in THE ISR confirms its leading role in this area, both in Poland and internationally.
