Scientists, researchers, and students from across Europe will gather in Gdańsk this September for the highly anticipated NORDQUA excursion, an in-depth field study exploring the glacial history of northern Poland. Scheduled to take place from September 17 to 19, 2025, the excursion will focus on the evolution of glacial landforms, sediment structures, and coastal hazards shaping the southern Baltic coastline.

Organized by leading geologists and researchers from institutions such as the University of Gdańsk and Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, the three-day program promises immersive fieldwork, engaging discussions, and an opportunity to analyze key geological sites, including sediment outcrops and drilling locations. Participants are required to arrive in Poland by September 16 to ensure a timely start to the field activities.

The excursion will offer attendees a rare chance to study firsthand the remnants of Ice Age glaciation and how these forces continue to influence the Baltic coastal environment. Scientists will guide participants through critical discussions on sedimentary structures, glacial processes, and modern coastal erosion threats.

“This excursion is an unparalleled opportunity for both experienced researchers and young scholars to deepen their understanding of the dynamic geological history of this region,” said Karol Tylmann, a key organizer from the University of Gdańsk.

Students participating in the excursion can earn 2 ECTS points upon submitting a written report on their findings. The estimated participation fee, covering transportation, study materials, and daily lunch packs, is set at 400-450 PLN. The exact fee will be confirmed in May, depending on final funding and participant numbers.

Interested individuals must register by the end of April through the official form available here. The final program itinerary will be released in May, providing detailed insights into the sites and research topics covered during the event.

The NORDQUA excursion is backed by a distinguished organizing committee comprising experts from leading Polish research institutions, including the Polish Academy of Sciences and the Polish Geological Institute. Their expertise ensures a well-rounded exploration of both past and present geological phenomena.

As September approaches, anticipation builds for what promises to be a landmark event in the field of Quaternary science. Whether an experienced researcher or an eager student, this excursion offers a valuable opportunity to unravel the mysteries of northern Poland’s glacial past while contributing to ongoing scientific discussions.
