Employee of the Department of Geodesy at Gdańsk University of Technology Wins the Polish Academy of Sciences Award!

MHZ-PAN

The Gdańsk branch of the Polish Academy of Sciences has awarded Ph.D. Eng. Marek Hubert Zienkiewicz the prize for young scientists for the best creative work published in 2022.

The distinction for an employee of the Department of Geodesy, Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering, has been awarded for scientific research described in the article „Identification of unstable reference points and estimation of displacements using squared Msplit estimation” published in the scientific journal Measurement. This journal is currently listed as one of the highest-ranked journals in the points ranking list compiled by the Minister of Education and Science, assigned a maximum of 200 points.

We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Dr. Zienkiewicz and wish him further success in his scientific work!

Biography

Ph.D. Eng. Marek Hubert Zienkiewicz is a graduate of the Faculty of Geodesy, Spatial Engineering, and Civil Engineering at the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn. During his studies, he developed his scientific interests under the guidance of representatives of the Olsztyn school of geodetic adjustment.

In his doctoral studies, he became interested in Msplit estimation - an innovative method of processing observations, the author of which, Prof. Ph.D habil. Eng. Zbigniew Wiśniewski, received the Minister of Science and Higher Education award in 2011 for its development. The results of the research conducted by the young scientist under the supervision of Prof. Wiśniewski were described in the dissertation "Selected theoretical and application properties of Msplit estimation," which he defended with distinction on October 10, 2017.

After completing his doctoral studies at the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn, he continued his research career as an assistant and assistant professor in the Department of Geodesy and Oceanography at the Maritime University of Gdynia. In March 2019, Ph.D. Eng. Zienkiewicz joined the scientific staff of the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Gdańsk University of Technology, being employed as an assistant professor in the Department of Geodesy. Currently, since March 2022, he serves as the Deputy Head of the Department of Geodesy for scientific matters.

Ph.D. Eng. Zienkiewicz is the author or co-author of 22 scientific articles published in peer-reviewed journals with broad international circulation. His research interests as a Gdańsk geodesist focus on the theoretical and applied properties of the parameter estimation method in the split functional model of geodetic observations (the Msplit estimation concept), analysis of deformation in geodetic networks, development and investigation of properties of non-standard methods of processing observations, as well as processing geodetic data using both total and classical least squares methods.

Currently, Marek Zienkiewicz is involved in the implementation of the project entitled "Msplit(q) estimation of parameter displacements using multivariate binding conditions for competitive parameters," which is funded under the Miniatura 5 competition organized by the National Science Centre. In this grant, he serves as the project leader in the Department of Geodesy.
