Where did the geodesists come back from? Relation from photogrammetric measurements in Vilnius

Polish-Lithuanian survey team

„Where did the Lithuanian people come back from?”- this is how Adam Mickiewicz asked almost two hundred years ago in his immortal historical poem entitled "Konrad Wallenrod". The attribute of great poetry is its timelessness and universality, which is why verses from the works of the outstanding Polish-Lithuanian national poet-prophet can be boldly paraphrased by writing: "Where did the geodesists come back from? From the measurements performed in Vilnius!”.

This is becouse at last week, employees of the Department of Geodesy, Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering of the Gdańsk University of Technology, visited the Vilnius Gediminas University of Technology, where in the period from 22 to 26 May 2023, they carried out a number of measurements by use of photogrammetric and remote sensing methods in geodetic monitoring of hard-to-reach historical objects.  The capital of the Republic of Lithuania was visited by: DEng Marek Hubert Zienkiewicz (deputy head of the Department of Geodesy), DEng Paweł Burdziakowski and DEng Paweł Tysiąc.

Young Tri-City scientists were received by the Dean of the Faculty of Environmental Engineering - prof. Dr. Donatas Čygas, and the Head of the Department of Geodesy and Cadastre - prof. Dr. Jūratė Sužiedelytė-Visockienė. As part of the meeting at the Vilnius university, a short lecture was given by DEng Zienkiewicz, concerning the possibility of establishing long-term scientific cooperation between Polish and Lithuanian researchers who deal with issues in the field of geodesy on a daily basis. The lecture was also attended by the academic staff of the Department of Geodesy and Cadastre of the Vilnius Technical University. After the organizational part, the Polish-Lithuanian research team carried out comprehensive measurements of the Upper Castle in Vilnius and in the area of the Castle Hill by using unmanned aerial vehicles, terrestrial laser scanners and GNSS receivers. Polish and Lithuanian scientists have planned another measurement campaign for September this year, after which the Gdańsk and Vilnius surveyors will face the challenge of developing measurement data, verifying the research hypotheses and publishing the research results in prestigious scientific journals.

The foreign measurement campaign was carried out thanks to the funds obtained by DEng Paweł Burdziakowski as part of the NEPTUNIUM grant competition, concerning "Establishment of research cooperation and reconnaissance research of Gediminas Castle together with the Castle Hill in Vilnius".
