The Department of Sanitary Engineering was established in 1982 at the Faculty of Hydrotechnics.
Department of Railway Engineering and Bridges was set up in 2014, linking Department of Railway Engineering and Bridges Team, which in years 2006-2014 was a part of Department of Structural Mechanics and Bridges.
The present Head of the Department is dr hab. inż. Krzysztof Żółtowski, prof. nadzw. PG.
In the year 1945 the Department of Iron and Wooden Strutures was established at Gdańsk University of Technology. In subsequent years, it was given the following names: Department of Steel Construction, Department of Metal Structures, Department of Metal Structures and Construction Management.
Department of Mechanics of Materials and Structures in the new formula has been operating since 1.09.2015. In the immediately preceding period, the team had been a part of Department of Structural Mechanics.

Department of Highway and Transportation Engineering is one of the oldest Departments of Gdansk University of Technology. Department of Highway and Transportation Engineering was founded in 1945, as a Department of Road Construction and Earthworks on the Faculty of Civil Engineering.

Konstrukcje z betonu jako temat zainteresowań naukowych i obszar działalności dydaktycznej, było obecne od samego początku istnienia politechniki w Gdańsku (Technische Hochschule). Działalność ta prowadzona była w okresie przedwojennym na Katedrze Statyki i Budownictwa Żelbetowego (Lehrstuhl fur Statik und Eisenbetonbau), której ostatnim kierownikiem był prof. Luhrs.
